How to Do a Perfect Messy Bun in 4 Steps

How to Do a Perfect Messy Bun in 4 Steps

Whether you’re running late in the morning, heading straight to work after the gym or are just going for an effortlessly chic look, the messy bun is one of our favorite laidback hairdos. With the holidays right around the corner, we love chic messy buns for holiday parties and those cozy fall nights.

We see girls on Instagram and Pinterest wearing the perfect messy bun. But how come that effortless and relaxed messy bun never works when you try to do it at home? It always either looks too perfect or like a bird’s nest is placed on top of your head. There’s no in-between – ugh. Dear Clark has put together some tips and tricks so you can nail the perfect messy bun.

Tease It Up

You can’t achieve the messy bun look without kind of messy hair, right? Tease your hair with a comb, and spray your roots with a texture spray or volumizing tonic. With a few extra spritzes, your roots will be plump and it’ll add volume to the overall look.

Skip the Brush

Before you wrap your hair into the messy bun, don’t brush it. The brush will just smooth it out and flatten it, and there’s nothing messy about that. If you want the chic effortless look, use your hands to pull your hair into a ponytail at the crown of your head.

Beauty Tip: Make this the ultimate boho babe look by adding small braids into your ponytail. When you wrap your hair into a bun, the tiny braids will peak out. Can it get any cuter than that?

Wrap It Around

Here comes the important part, but there’s really no wrong or right way to do it since it’s the messy bun. Tease your ponytail a little more, and then wrap your hair around the base of the pony. Secure the look by adding a few bobby pins here and there (or a little more if you have thick hair). If the bun looks too put together, let some strands fall out.

The Finishing Touches

Add some finishing salve to the strands you let out to ensure they don’t get frizzy. Let some pieces out on the side, in the front, or from the bun itself. If you want to make it a more styled look, slightly curl the strands you let out.

We love the messy bun because you can style however you’d like and it still looks fabulous. Going for the cute-but-I-just-got-out-of-bed look? Perfect! Going for more of a put-together messy bun? That’s perfect too! It’s completely up to you, and that’s the beauty of it.
